Divergent

Author: Veronica Roth
ISBN: 978-0-00-742042-1
Pages: 487

Hi Everyone

I had mixed thoughts about this book, from a mothers point of view.  But as a reader I become so enticed that I couldn't put it down.  The characters go through so many emotions and trials that you just have to keep reading.  The twists are great.  The plot is different.  The very reasons I kept reading.

The city is made up of factions.  Each person must conform to the statue of their faction.  Tris, the main character doesn't belong to any in one faction, she is divergent.  If she lets anyone know then she will become factionless.  Because of this she struggles to fit in into the most dangerous faction and finds it hard being divergent.  But who can she trust.

I will be writing spoilers if say any more.

This is trilogy and a movie.

It is available from: Book depository, Fishpond and amazon.

1984

Author: George Orwell

ISBN: 9871785996313

Hi Everyone

Since being made to study the Classics and analyze them down to the last sentence, I have developed an enjoyment for the richness of their writings. George Orwell's - 1984, has been on my bookcase for over a year now so I thought it was time to read it. I was avoiding reading this during the pandemic because political views ran rampant and I didn't want my enjoyment of reading a novel to become a look into the government's ways of handling a situation like the pandemic, which our generation has not had to handle before.

Although 1984 could be read as a politically based book, I found myself seeing it like many young adult books on the market. One that comes to mind is 'Divergent', there was even a movie that followed the book. I read 'Divergent' and went to the movie. Both novels grounded themselves on the ability of a higher structure to control the foundations of their society. Like 'Divergent', 1984 had me locked into the character's life. There was one part in 1984 that I closed my eyes because I could see the happenings too vividly in my mind.  This is an example of excellent 'show don't tell' writing which puts this novel into the masterpiece of literature category.  No wonder it has become a classic.

I made the mistake of looking up reviews on Youtube only to find myself adding 'A Brave New World' to my reading list.  There are debates all over the internet, debating these two books and which one... whatever the debate. How could I not add another book to my reading list? Hence, I have spent the last week listening to an audio reading of 'Brave New World' - I will put up a review for that one soon. It was in listening to 'Brave New World' while '1984' was still fresh in my mind that I found myself reflecting on 'Divergent'. These books together could make many fantastic essay questions.

I would encourage anyone reading these books to read them for enjoyment, not to find political arguments to serve one-self's reasonings. To read a great novel is to find enjoyment and/or self-reflection. I for one have enjoyed all the dimensions that '1984, Divergent, and Brave New World' bring to our world of reading.

Description:

Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.

Arguably the 20th-century's most famous novel, 1984 is a dystopian study of political tyranny, mind control, paranoia and secret mass surveillance.

Set in Oceania, the ultimate totalitarian state, it describes a society tyrannized by a ruling party led by Big Brother. In the furtherance of eradicating all expressions of individuality, people' lives are constantly monitored. Telescreens are everywhere, helicopters hover around buildings, spying through windows, and the Thought Police are constantly on alert.

Despite the threat of severe punishment, Outer Party Member Winston Sith takes a break from his job rewriting history. At home, in the one corner of his apartment that is hidden from the telescreen, he sits down to write a diary.

The cultural impact of George Orwell's masterpiece continues to resonate to this day.

Who was George Orwell?

According to Benet's Readers Encyclopedia 4th ed:

(pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, 1903-1950) English novelist, essayist, and critic. An independent socialist in adult life, Orwell was born in India, where his father was in the civil service. He won a scholarship to Eton but was financially unable to go on to Oxford or Cambridge. Instead he spent five years with the Imperial Police in Burma (1922-27). Much of his early work was at least partly autobiographical.... Orwell was known as a superb prose stylist who took a lucid, documentary approach to fiction. His Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters (4 vols) appeared in 1968.

Insurgent (Divergent)

Veronica Roth hasn't let me down!  This book captured my attention just as much as Divergent, the first book in the series.

Tris sets out to find the truth behind everything in her world.  What had her mother ment?  What was the secret Marcus knew.  What was really the intentions of the factionless.  What are the other factions plotting?  And... what is beyond the fences?

I had to keep reading to find the answers to the many questions and while doing so I was caught in Tris' emotional world.  I found the battle between Tris and Tobias (Four, in the first book but called Tobias in the second book)  a little annoying at times.  I wanted to yell at them and tell them to get over themselves and move on.  Really, they go through much together yet don't really treat each other that well... then they are back together... but only for a moment before something else interferes.  Love isn't really that complicated.  But it give the book an emotional feeling, and love does conker all.  There is nothing like a little emotion within a story.  I look forward to seeing what happens to Tris and Tobias in book three.

Definatly well worth reading!

Allegiant (Divergent)

Hi everyone.  It has taken a while to finish this book as it is exam time again.  I love the time of night when I get to put everything away and read a book that I don't have to memorise.  Allegiant has been my relaxation the past couple of weeks and I have say it is an excellent ending to the Divergent trilogy.

I have really enjoyed this series.  I have been to see the first movie but been beaten by my daughter to view the second.  Well here is the end of an adventure, unless you want to read Four's account of the drama that unfolded in between these pages, in the book simply title Four.  I am not sure if I want to go down that avenue.   If you recommend that I do then leave a comment and convince me.

I give credit to Veronica in the completion of this series.  It was packed with information, as the lies and secrets unravelled.  I was not left disapointed anytime I picked this up for my quiet time... in another world.  Or was it another world?  Really with all the options open to science and governments where can our world and DNA manipulation lead too?  Gets one thinking really.

Seriously if you haven't read Allegiant yet then pick it up!  You need to know the ending.  And... What an ending, Veronica.  I didn't see that one coming!

This was available almost everywhere.  All the bookstores I enter have it on the best selling list... Still.

The Blemished

The Blemished
Author: Sarah Dalton
ISBN: 9781492700203

Hi Everyone,

This book seemed to take a while for me to read with all the 'back to school' and 'back to work' commitments and the added National holidays that are thrown into the start of our year.  Anyway, I have really enjoyed this book!  So much so that I have needed to purchase the rest of the series.

It was plot that enticed me.  The concept of Blemished and Gems became a reality as I thought of the possibilities of science today.  The blemished are the normal every day person, un-tampered with by science.  The Gems are the perfectly constructed DNA human beings.  The Blemished are trained to serve the Gems.  The blemished girls are given an operation at sixteen to stop any possibility of pregnancy.  The Gems on the other hand are the opposite.  They have everything!  Beauty, mansions and the Blemished. Are you getting the picture? Mina is a Blemished.  She also has powers that make her special.  This twists the whole story at every angle.  Add to all this the rebellion; a teacher that will drive you crazy; friendships and a love triangle (or square as Mina puts it), and you have one fantastic plot.  Hence the reason I now own the rest of the series.

For all who enjoyed the Divergent series, I think you will enjoy this too.  Now that does not make me an expert in the comparison of young adult reads.  For me, I think the two series have their place together on my book shelf.

Here is a look at the description, but I don't think it give enough justice to the book.  If you have Kindle it doesn't cost a lot to read the first book in this series.  Actually, if your reading today, it is free from Amazon in Kindle format, so you have nothing to lose in trying it.

Description:

A beautiful world comes at a price... In a world filled with stunning clones Mina Hart is Blemished. Her genes are worthless and that takes away her rights: her right to an Education, her right to a normal life and her right to have a child. Mina keeps a dangerous secret which she never thought she could share until she meets Angela on her first day at St Jude's School. But their friendship is soon complicated by Angela's adoptive brother Daniel. Mina finds herself drawn to his mysterious powers and impulsive nature. Then there is the gorgeous clone Sebastian who Mina is forbidden from even speaking to... The Blemished is a frightening take on a fractured future where the Genetic Enhancement Ministry have taken control of Britain. It will take you on a ride filled with adventure, romance and rebellion.

Stray

Stray

Stray

Racheal has done it again!  She has written a sequel to Spark that was just as gripping as the first in the series.  I hate it when I start reading a trilogy only to find that I should have stopped with the first book.   Stray only left me wanting to turn page after page.  I am eagerly waiting for next year when Rachael Craw plans to produce the third book in this series, Shield.

What made this book so readable?  The characters were intense.  It was as if I was in the room with them.  There was plenty of action to keep the suspense of the next chapter leading me to read just one more page, before I went to sleep.  Problem being, it was never enough and one page lead to another hour of reading.  The plot was very interesting.  How on earth do writers come up with such ideas?  I can only wish I had just a little of such an ability.

Now in my opinion this series would make a fabulous movie.  I enjoyed the Insurgent series.  I enjoyed the  Insurgent movies (I was a little disappointed in the Divergent movie).  Now this series I am enjoying by far more.  I would be the first in line for movie tickets if this ever made its way into the theatres.

Here is a peak at the book through its blurb:

Evie is a shield: designed to kill in order to protect, and the Affinity Project have finally come for her.  But Evie isn't ready for the sinister organisation to take control of her life, her body, her mind.  She isn't ready to follow their rules about who can live and who must die - not when it condemns the innocent.  She has one option: risk losing everything and everyone - including Jamie - and run.

Shield

Shield
Author: Rachael Craw
ISBN: 978-1-922179-64-7

Hi Everyone

I finally managed to get my hands on Shield, by Racheal Craw.  I was given her first book as a Goodreads giveaway and from that very first book I was hooked.  I took my kids to the library to collect books for reading on holiday and found highlighted on the library shelves  - Shield!  I had to put aside all other books on my TBR list and read this one.  Hence, I sat in the sun on holiday, I sat on my bed, I sat on the couch, I sat at the table... can you tell this book enabled me to have a complete holiday as nothing else was achieved.

Rachael Craw didn't disappoint me at all.  This book took me down a different avenue from the previous two books, as this one is set amongst the Affinity Project that she had been avoiding in the previous books.  I found this strange to begin with, but quickly settled into the new scene.  Rachel has an amazing imagination and she takes the reader for a ride through an action packed plot line.

I enjoyed the pull between Evie and Jamie.  I was pleased to see that although at times their connection seemed broken, it in turn strengthened into spoilers that I cannot talk of - read it.  I got annoyed with the character, Hannah, not that it was her fault but she really annoyed me.  I wanted her to disappear form the story.  She was destined to ruin Jamie and Evie's chances of a happy ever after - not that the out come would be bound to such an ending.  These three characters kept me reading more than than the plot.

There was just enough action.  I would have liked more in the beginning of the book to entice me into the Affinity Project.  But, I was hooked in as the story developed.

Overall, this was a good ending to the  Spark, Stray, Shield trilogy.  I am pleased I was sent the first book, as I don't know that I would have picked it up otherwise.  These books are young adult genre, and after reading this and the Divergent trilogy I personally would put them into much the same category (My opinion only).

The following is a Youtube clip placed on Youtube by the author.  She explains a little more about Shield and you get to see the face behind the writing.

Description:

Evie is out of options.  She must comply with the Affinity Project - obey their rules, play thier deadly games, give up Jamie.  And her losses keep growing.

When she decides to help a small group of Shields, trying to affect change, Evie finds herself in the firing line.  Counsellor Knox is intent on revealing her secrets and shackling her to the Affinity Project for life.  To protect her family, Evie must betray those closest to her.

The oods of success - let alone survival - are slim.

The final thrilling conclusion to the Spark Series.
