Thoughts... A little poetry

 Hi Everyone

I was feeling like reading a little poetry and came across this little piece.  It is in the public domain, I found it over at https://poets.org/poem/thoughts-0 It was originally published in 1915. If you take a look over at poets.org I am sure you will find a lot more things that you will enjoy.

Dear Diary

Dear Diary

Shh, shh, shh,

Tell me your secrets,

Bound between parchment,

Unlock your private pathography.

Entrust it to me?

Friendship to friendship,

Soul to Soul,

Pen to parchment,

Restricted, restrained, contained,

Vowed to silence.

Trusted until scandalous eyes,

Seek to deviously devour

The human’s emotional habitat,

Privately bound between

Pretty parchment pages.

Shh. Shh. Shh.

Stay silent

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all having a great week. As many of you know I love poetry. Somehow, somewhere, sometime in my teenage years, I found poetry. It was one thing that I easily understood in English class. I loved that I could read between the lines and see hidden secretive meanings just waiting to be discovered.

Who else enjoys poetry?

Who shares my joy of words; play with words; sounds and metaphors?

At The End Of The Day

At the end of the day

I maintain a complete sense of serenity,

As I read sincerely to my freckled face children.

Absolutely no sign apparent of the previous hours,

I spent pointlessly preventing chaos at the office.

I continually offer just one more short story,

As I consciously strive to sustain the moment,

And when a string of seven books is completed,

I struggle to not look into their angelical eyes

As I close up the last book and kiss them goodnight,

Then gently switch out the light.

To the kitchen I then quickly take flight,

Flick on the jug and casually search for the coffee,

Then I silently sit, with a steaming hot cup in my hand,

And strategically try to take in the silence.

Strangely I hear the fire flickering

And the clamouring of the fridge,

Then I notice one of the kids is snoring –

I remember, some say silence is golden,

Then strangely imagine my hair sprinkled silver,

With the house eerily silent and no-longer full,

So I say silence is not worth holding,

Instead I sincerely suggest, treasure the kids.

Endangered Characters

Endangered Characters

Hidden on the old oak bookcase,

Sits a million words unseen,

Wondrous worlds not yet travelled,

Mysterious plots pleading, to be unravelled.

Endangered characters fret in flattened pages

Calling courageously when I pass,

Boldly battling inside the covers,

Extinction evident, if they remain undiscovered.

Alice still chases her White Rabbit,

While he stupidly stresses over time,

“I’m late, I’m late” I hear him squeal,

Is his world really that unreal?

One day I’ll sit upon a wishing chair,

And free each character as I read,

But I need my White Rabbit to sit still,

So I can stop, search beyond covers, and save them all.

Desiderata - Part 6

Hi Everyone,

We did it!  This is the last stanza of Desiderata.  What a beautiful, thought provoking poem. I am pleased I have taken the time to think about each stanza, day by day.

Now, I leave you with this last work of art.  Be cheerful.  It isn't always easy, life brings it's ups and downs to the table every day.  But at least we can a least try to be a little cheerful each day, after all it is sometimes contagious.

Desiderata - Part 5

Hi Everyone

What are you being hard on yourself for?  Chill out and let the world unfold around you for just a minute or two.  It may just clear your mind enough to get you through.

We have one more day to go and we have completed Desiderarta!

Desiderata - Part 4

Hi Everyone,

We are working our way through this terrific piece of literature now.  Part 4, only a couple more days to go.  What do you get from this stanza?  There is quite a bit to think about in this stanza.  One thing that I think we could all take on board from time to time is our imaginings.  How often do we worry about things which never end up happening?  Come on, we all worry far to much!

So relax today, maybe grab a book 😀

Desiderata - Part 3

Hi Everyone,

Part 3 of Desiderata we are half way.

Okay leave me a comment below about what you get from today's stanza.  The main thing that jumps out for me is being not blind to the virtue around you.  My mother always taught me there was something good to see in everyone and everything, sometimes you just had to look hard to find it.  She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart and this is one message I remember her always enforcing.  So, if you can't find anything special in today's stanza take away my mothers advice and find something good in someone or something today - even if you have to look hard to find it.

Deiderata - Part 2

Hi Everyone

Today we have Stanza 2 of Desiderata.  How easy it is to compare oneself to another, even as children.  I often hear children comparing themselves with the achievements of others in their classes and activities.  What age do we start the comparison trap?  What age do we intend to end the comparison trap?

Desiderata - Part 1

Hi Everyone,

I thought it was about time to bring you another poem and while looking through one of my favourite poetry resources, Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorisation by Andrew Pedewa, I found the Desiderata.  I have heard of this before but never looked at it.  I am quite impressed by this piece of poetry but it is quite long.

So, I thought we could have a stanza a day that way we can ponder the words as they still have as much meaning as they did back in 1927 when it was originally written by Max Ehrmann.

I have also noticed that I haven't told you about the resource, Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorisation, so I will give you a review of that after I have finished bringing you Desiderata 😀

I leave you now to ponder the words in stanza 1 and wish you all a brilliant day.

Asking for roses

Hi Everyone.

Everytime I read this I come up with something new from it.  This is what I love in poetry, the visionary and the mystery all connected dependent on how we see the world each day.

Robert Frost has to be one of my favourite poets, I keep going back to his poems over an over again and never become warry of his words.

Poetry corner

Hi Everyone,

I was looking for a poem for you today and I think I have found one of the shortest peoms I have on my Kindle.  This was written by Heny David Thoreau (1817 - 1862) and I located it in Great Short Poems, Edited by Paul Negri, Dover Thrift edition.

It is a thoughtful little peom.  Two lines, with a sense of truth.  Simple yet thoughtful.  Some of us spend too much time uttering rather than living.  Some of us live to fullest but have nothing to utter when the day is finished.  See, it is a thoughtful little poem if you think over it a little.

Hi Everyone,

I hope you enjoy the poem I have chosen for this week.  I found it on a site I have just discovered Allpoetry.com  Take a look in on them sometime and see what you think.

The background photo was taken while we were out camping as a family this weekend.  It highlights the beautiful country I live in and often take for granted until I stop and breathe like I did yesterday.

If you have a favourite poetry site that you think I should take a look at then leave me a comment.

Why...Little Miss Muffet?

Hi Everyone,

Why Little Miss Muffet?  Because last night the clock beside my bed read 2:03am and I was lying there wide awake!

Again, why?  Because this nursery rhyme and memories of my mother were running over and over in my mind.  I remembered my mother often saying "What are you doing Miss Muffet!"  and "Are you ever going to be ready Miss Muffet!"  I remembered all this with a smile.

As the words ran through my mind I realised the poetic qualities in the rhyme.  I had never done so before.  I wish we had been given these kinds of poetic devices to study over the last few years.  It is simple, but there are many avenues that can be looked at with it.  The rhyme is obvious, the repetitive sounds also are easily distinguished.  But what about the metaphoric options that could be dragged out.  I know it is just a nursery rhyme, but we could use these simple rhymes to teach kids metaphorically also.

How?  Well why did she run away?  In all the picture books the spider is cute!  In my country spiders are harmless but we still carry the genetic fear of them.  Why?  And, if we took the spider as metaphoric what was she running from.... what could the spider metaphorically be?  To some this may sound like a little too much thinking! But for a child trying to understand poetic devices this could be so much more understandable.

Anyway, I did get back to sleep and enjoyed the memories and the poetic form that I discovered from a treasured childhood nursery rhyme.  What is your favourite nursery rhyme?
